Sam Walton - Walmart
Sam Walton first opened his Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962, borrowing heavily from the keen observation that the American consumer was moving towards a different type of general store. During the beginning of Walmart, no one knew that his creation would introduce a new way of retailing. But the impact has lasted generations, with millions of lives improved and a global company, the largest corporation in the world, excelling and providing quality products for loyal customers.
Under Sam Walton’s drive, vision and inspiration, Walmart has grown and prospered unparalleled by any other retail store in history.
Creative analysis: At the beginning of Walmart’s history, numerous discount retailers existed throughout the United States. Sam made Walmart what it is today by studying its competition. So Sam bought a plane so he could fly over rural America. The Walmart founder flew around the country to figure out where to put his warehouse stores. He analyzed the parking lots of his competitors, identified significant cities, and found where he could build his next store. Some entrepreneurs are born with innate gifts, but Sam has taught many that greats are best at seeing what worked for others and working hard to improve the product or service.
Accolades: Sam Walton received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Missouri in 1940. He then served as a U.S. Army Intelligence Corps captain from 1942 to 1945. He operated numerous stores and gained experience at JC Penney before opening the first Walmart. Time magazine and CBS News recognized Sam Walton as one of the most influential business geniuses of the 20th century. Sam also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George Bush. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor the country bestows on its private citizens.
